What is double opt-in?

Definition
Double opt-in is a sign-up method where a new contact must confirm their subscription via a link in an email before they're added to your active list.
Also called: Double opt-in, Confirmed opt-in, Verified opt-in
01Fewer, but better contacts
Single opt-in adds everyone instantly — including bots, mistyped addresses and people who didn't really mean it. Double opt-in requires an extra click to confirm, which filters out that noise. You get fewer sign-ups, but the ones you get are real, engaged and correctly spelled.
The cleaner list pays off in deliverability: fewer bounces and spam traps mean a better sender reputation, which means more of your emails arrive. For brands that send a lot, the slightly lower sign-up rate is almost always worth it in the form of a healthier list.
Frequently asked questions
Does double opt-in cost me sign-ups?+
Yes, some — the ones who can't be bothered to confirm. But those contacts were low-value anyway. In return, bots and mistyped emails get filtered out, giving you a healthier list and better deliverability.
Should I always use double opt-in?+
Not always, but it's strongly recommended if deliverability or list quality is a problem, or if you send large volumes. For some brands, more contacts (single opt-in) weighs heavier — it's a trade-off.
