Definition
CTR (Click-Through Rate) is the number of clicks divided by the number of impressions, expressed as a percentage. If an ad gets 30 clicks from 1,000 impressions, CTR is 3%.

01What CTR tells you — and what it doesn't
CTR is a quick relevance signal: does the ad or search result stop people enough to make them click? In paid search, CTR also affects Quality Score and therefore what you pay per click. On paid social, CTR is tightly linked to the creative and the hook.
But CTR is a mid-funnel metric, not a goal. An ad can have a sky-high CTR and dismal economics if the clicks don't convert — clickbait pulls in people who don't buy. CTR should always be read alongside conversion rate and CPA.
02CTR, CPC and CPM are connected
The three are mathematically linked: CPC = CPM / (CTR × 10). Raise CTR with better creative and your CPC falls even though CPM is unchanged — you get more clicks out of the same impressions. It's one of the cleanest ways to lower your click price without touching the budget.
That's why creative testing isn't only a top-funnel exercise: a higher CTR propagates all the way down into the economics via lower CPC and a better auction position.
Frequently asked questions
Is a high CTR always good?+
Not on its own. A high CTR with a low conversion rate often means the ad is pulling in the wrong clicks. CTR is a relevance signal, but it's the conversion behind it that decides whether the click was worth the money.
How are CTR and CPC related?+
Inversely: a higher CTR gives a lower CPC at the same CPM, because you get more clicks out of the same impressions. In paid search, a higher CTR also improves Quality Score, which can lower the click price further.
