What is server-side GTM?

Definition
Server-side GTM (sGTM) is a Google Tag Manager container that runs on your own server instead of in the user's browser — so data is processed and sent to the platforms server-side rather than client-side.
Also called: Server-side GTM, sGTM, Server-side Tag Manager
Sådan virker det
Browser-tracking taber hændelser til adblockere, cookie-spærring og iOS. Server-side sender konverteringen fra din egen server direkte til Metas CAPI og Google — uden for blokeringernes rækkevidde. Bedre data = bedre optimering.
01Why move tags to the server
Classic (client-side) GTM fires all tags in the browser, where ad blockers, ITP and cookie restrictions block a growing share. Server-side GTM moves the processing to a container on your own server: the browser sends a single event to your server, and the server distributes it onward to Meta CAPI, Google, GA4 and the rest — out of the ad blocker's reach.
Beyond better data quality, it delivers control and speed: fewer scripts in the browser (a faster site), one place to enrich and govern data, and the ability to control exactly which data is shared with whom. It's the backbone of a modern, resilient tracking setup.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between client-side and server-side GTM?+
Client-side GTM fires tags in the browser, where they're hit by ad blockers and cookie restrictions. Server-side GTM processes data on your own server, out of reach of those blocks — which delivers better data quality, control and page speed.
Does server-side GTM require a server?+
Yes — typically a container hosted on something like Google Cloud or a dedicated provider. It's a technical setup, but a one-time investment that lifts data quality across every channel.

Glossary
What is server-side tracking?
Server-side tracking sends conversion events from your own server (e.g. via a server-side Google Tag Manager container and Meta's Conversions API) instead of from the user's browser — so data isn't lost to ad blockers, cookie restrictions and iOS limitations.

What is a data layer?
A data layer is a structured JavaScript object on a website where important data (product, price, order, customer) is placed consistently, so tags and tracking tools can read it reliably.
