01Why returns have to be in the equation

A return cancels the sale but still costs: shipping both ways, handling, possible loss of value, and payment fees that aren't always refunded. Leave the return rate out, and ROAS, contribution margin and CLTV all look better than they are — and the bidding optimizes toward a profit that partly gets sent back.

In some categories — fashion and footwear especially — the return rate can be double-digit and vary sharply by product and size. There it's not a detail, but one of the heaviest variable costs there is.

02Returns as a margin and data lever

Treat expected returns as a variable cost in contribution margin (CM2), so break-even ROAS and the profit signal to the ad platforms reflect reality. If you can feed return-adjusted value back to Meta and Google, they bid on what actually stays sold — not on what was put in the cart.

The return rate itself can also be lowered: better size guides, more accurate product photos and descriptions, and catching patterns per product (specific items or sizes that get returned more often). Every percentage point less return is pure margin.

Frequently asked questions

Why do returns distort my ROAS?+

Because ROAS measures the revenue attributed at purchase — not net of what's later sent back. At high return rates, ROAS therefore overstates the real value. Count returns as a variable cost in contribution margin.

How do I lower the return rate?+

With better size guides, accurate photos and descriptions, and by analyzing which products and sizes get returned most, so the problems can be fixed at the source. Every avoided return is pure margin.
